By 1913 The MotorCycle magazine had been in publication for 10 years and had been steadily growing in popularity, advertising themselves as having the largest circulation. So what was in the 1913 November 6th edition that motorcycle riders would find of interest? Well pretty much a bit of everything from a great collection of period advertisements to what was new from the motorcycle manufacturers for the quickly approaching new year. Gamages had their latest riding gear in a full page advertisement (but only for those who could afford it), another full page advertisement from Clyno – The Side Car Motorcycle and their order of 12 Clyno Express Delivery Outfits for the New Zealand Government. Bradbury and Rudge were listing their models and prices, there was a competition with the first prize being a Douglas Ladies Model. Or perhaps the Millennium “Fitall” 2 speed gear to make your motorcycle more manageable? There are articles on new or upgraded models for 1914 including Triumph, James and their V twin, AJS, Zeniths new 6hp V twin, the new 3 speed V twin Rex, Indians 7hp model with electric self starter, the 2 stroke Scott and of course improvements on the latest Royal Enfields. Bradbury had a new 499cc horizontal twin (looking very Douglas-ish) to show to the world. Perhaps most interesting was the article on the new Wilkinson 12 jet carburettor headed A Racing or Touring Carburettor. Was it any good?
All this was giving hope to a great new year of motorcycling but how things were going to change in 1914 when the start of WW1 was declared on 4th August 1914. Enjoy.
