As simple as things can seem to be, even when it comes to the most basic of mechanics sometimes it does help to have a book or manual to refer to and this publication covers that.
This little Mosquito was manufactured by Meccanica Garelli of Milan, Italy and the drive was by a friction wheel to the rear tyre. As with most friction drive cyclemotors rain is not your friend, nor is a low tyre pressure or a badly worn tyre. But in the ideal situation it saves a lot of pedalling. I quite like that external flywheel, not recommended for long trousers without cycle clips, or really baggy stockings.
And to purchase one of these little beasts, well you could order one through your local dealer, pedal into town for it to be fitted, and power home with all of that 38.5cc looking every bit the biker. If you lived rural then you could order one, it would arrive in a box and with the owners manual be able to successfully install it. Anything from Garelli to get the public mobile.
This owners handbook for engine unit #437614 is not of a quality paper as it was turning to powder as I was scanning it, but then the manufacturer was probably not thinking that the handbook would last 75 years. But it still has all that important information to install and maintain a little power unit what would still be a lot of fun.
A great little engine, I would have one, even if it was just to display from a rotating stand in my workshop.
Another strike for the Mighty Stinkwheel.
The handbook is 26 pages and is a 5.9 M PDF
