1935 AJS Sales Catalogue

By 1935 AJS were starting to move away from sloper engine motorcycles and returning to what may have been considered the more conventional approach of the vertical engine. As can be seen in the 1934 AJS sales catalogue all their models were of the sloper design but for the following year only 5 models were. Was it that slopers can add length into the overall dimension or was it just styling. Some other manufacturers like Royal Enfield were also doing the same. Never the less there were still 11 models (including their OHC Sports models) and 3 sidecars listed.
As quoted by the manufacturers ‘The AJS range for 1935 includes models designed specifically for every use and purpose. Tourist, Sportsman, Utility Rider, Racing man – all are catered for by “AJS” Motorcycles’.
Models offered up were – Slopers – Model 35/5 3.49hp s.v., Model 35/9 4.98hp s.v. Deluxe, Model 35/18 4.98hp OHV, Model 35/6 3.49hp OHV Deluxe and Model 35/8 4.98hp OHV Deluxe. The new Vertical Engine models were – Model 35/12 2.46hp OHV, Model 35/16 3.47hp OHV and Model 35/4 4.98hp s.v.. And then there was the 2 O.H.C Racing Models – the 35/7 and 35/10. AJS also had English and Export models of their big 9.9hp sv V twins available. Of the most interesting was the Model 35/4 498cc side valve with its strange up draught carburettor. It looks as if it wants to fall off. Designed for better gas flow on the side valve or did the designer have a bad day and the build department dared not to question.
